Baseball Sweeps Toledo

MOUNT PLEASANT--Central Michigan had a pair of come-from-behind victories in a doubleheader sweep of Toledo on Saturday afternoon.
The Chippewas won an eight-inning thriller by a 6-5 count in the opener and had a 9-3 victory in the nightcap.
It took extra innings but the Chippewas pulled out a 6-5 win over Toledo in the opening game.
The Chippewas trailed 5-4 going into the bottom of the seventh when Mike Gates had an RBI double to tie the score at 5-5 and send the game into extra innings.
The Rockets got a pair of runners on base in the top of the eighth but starter Jeff Garner got J.D. Foust to strike out and Chris Arvay to ground out to end the inning.
With one out, Matt Crowley doubled to left field to drive UT pitcher Nick Szczur from the game. Reliever Shawn Hurst struggled, giving up a bunt single to Ryan Krueger that moved Crowley to third base. Scott Pickens gave CMU the victory with a single to center that scored Crowley.
Garner struck out 14 in picking up the complete-game win for the Chippewas. He gave up seven hits and five runs (four earned) to improve his record to 6-4.
Toledo had opened up the game with a 3-0 lead after scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.
The Chippewas came back with a run in the bottom of the first when Bryan Scheurer scored on an error to slice the lead to 3-1.
The Rockets scored single runs in the second and fifth innings to increase their lead to 5-1.
Crowley closed the gap to 5-4 with one swing of the bat in the sixth. With two runners aboard, Crowley smashed his eighth home run of the year - a three-run shot to left.
In game two, CMU spotted Toledo a 3-0 lead before roaring back to claim a 9-3 win over the Rockets.
Toledo scored two runs in the first and one in the second to take an early 3-0 advantage.
The Chippewas cut the lead to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the third inning.
Tim Bullinger and Bryan Scheurer led off the inning with back-to-back singles and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jason Helps. Bullinger scored the first run on an error by the catcher and Scheurer stole home to make it 3-2.
Central took an 8-3 lead in the next inning when it exploded for six runs.
Mike Galloway had the big blow of the inning - a double to center that scored three runs.
The Chippewas added one more run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Galloway to make it 9-3.
Chad Pleiness didn't allow a hit after the second inning in picking up the win for the Chippewas. He gave up six hits and three runs while striking out six to raise his record to 6-3 on the year.
The CMU offense was led by Galloway who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI.
The Chippewas go for the series sweep on Sunday when they host Toledo on Sunday at 1 p.m.
