Baseball Falls To Kent State In MAC Tourney

MUNCIE, Ind.--Kent State slammed four home runs in a 5-1 win over Central Michigan on Saturday afternoon at the Mid-American Conference Baseball Tournament.
The Chippewas now face Ball State in an elimination game on Saturday immediately following the Miami-Kent State matchup.
The game started as a pitchers duel between Central's Jeff Garner and Kent State's Dirk Hayhurst.
The game was scoreless through the first three innings before the Golden Flashes got on the scoreboard with three runs in the fourth inning.
Back-to-back home runs by Chris Welsch and John VanBenschoten accounted for Kent State's three runs. Welsch had a two-run homer to left while VanBenschoten had a solo shot to center field.
The Chippewas came back with a run in the fifth frame. Bryan Scheurer hit a two-out single to leftfield to score Tim Bullinger to close the gap to 3-1.
The Golden Flashes scored solo runs in the sixth and seventh innings courtesy of a pair of home runs.
Dave Mattle had a solo homer to left in the sixth while Brady Glass crushed a homer to right to increase Kent State's lead to 5-1.
The Chippewas squandered several chances to score. Central hit into double plays in the second, third and seventh innings.
Garner took the loss for the Chippewas to make his record 6-5 on the season. He gave up nine hits and five runs while striking out 10 in 8 1/3 innings of work.
Hayhurst picked up the win for KSU while reliever VanBenschoten picked up the save.
