MOUNT PLEASANT--Homecoming week couldn't have ended sweeter for the Central Michigan University volleyball team (7-12, 3-3 Mid-American). The Chippewas took down the Ohio Bobcats in three games on Saturday night to post three wins for the week.
The game scores were 30-28, 30-28 and 30-26.
Even though the Chippewas were outblocked by Ohio, six to 10, CMU made a statement on offense with a season-high .310 hitting percentage (59-19-129). The Bobcats tallied a .246 mark (48-17-126).
"We showed consistency in this match," said head coach Elaine Piha. "We stepped up and made big plays. We kept Ohio from scoring runs and winning in three proved what we can do as a team."
Three Chippewas totaled double-digit kill figures.
Middle hitter, Kendra DeVries (Fremont/Sr.) posted a match-high 13 kills with one error in 21 attempts for a season-high .571 hitting percentage. She had six digs and two block assists.
Juniors Liz Passen (Fishers, Ind.) and Melissa Reynolds (Port Huron) each added 12 kills.
Senior Susie Smith (Kalamazoo) provided consistency in the backcourt and served two aces in game three to set up match point. Emily Lovejoy (Traverse City/So.) smashed one of her nine kills to finish the match.
Setter Shaleene Glombowski (Marysville/Jr.) dished out 46 assists. She posted six kills, eight digs and three block assists.
"Shaleene made great choices and hitter selection tonight," said Piha. "To hit over a .300 mark as a team makes a point even though Ohio outblocked us."
Leading Ohio's offense was Julia Winkfield. She totaled 11 kills with zero errors in 16 attempts for a .688 hitting percentage.
Setter Briana Adamovsky had eight kills, 32 assists, nine digs, and two block assists.
CMU heads to Buffalo and Kent State on October 20 and 21, respectively. The match at Buffalo begins at 3 p.m., while the match at KSU begins at 7 p.m.
