MOUNT PLEASANT -- It was like there were two different soccer games when the Central Michigan women's soccer team battled Toledo to a 0-0 tie in Mount Pleasant on Sunday afternoon. CMU mounted a sustained offensive attack in the first two halves but the tables turned in the two overtimes, and Toledo nearly walked away with the sudden-victory win.
The Chippewas are now 4-5-4 on the season and own a 3-3-3 mark in Mid-American Conference play. Toledo is 6-6-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the conference
Overtime favored the Rockets as they had the momentum going into the extra periods. Toledo's Kelly Langenbeck tried to prevent extra sessions when she walked in all alone on CMU's netminder, Kari Alexander (Midland/So.) However, Alexander charged the striker to smother the attempt and kept Toledo off the board.
The Rockets created two separate chances in overtime for a walk-off victory. In the second OT, Corrie Hasenjager fired a shot that hit the post in the opening minute. She had a chance to redeem her missed opportunity again in the final minute of the fourth period. Hasenjager tried to one-time a cross to the far left side but missed wide.
The Chippewas nearly took a 1-0 lead in the 89th minute when CMU headed the ball into Toledo's net. But, it was called back because the Maroon and Gold were offsides.
A lot of the game was spent in Toledo's end as CMU's offense was able to move the ball around and set up the attack. The Chippewas rifled 15 shots at UT's goalkeeper, Elise Donovan, and she turned aside all nine shots on goal. She also saw the Chippewas launch 13 cornerkicks to Toledo's three.
Alexander shined when Toledo's offense sparked in the closing 25 minutes. She made two match-saving stops, one in the final minute of the second half, and one in the second OT. Alexander saw 11 Toledo shots and gobbled up all five shots on goal.
The Chippewas return to action next weekend when they play at Marshall on Friday, October 18. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
