OXFORD, Ohio - The Central Michigan University women's soccer team always gives Miami University a run for its money. But this time, CMU took the money and ran.
The Chippewas escaped rain-soaked Oxford, Ohio, with a 3-2 win over the Mid-American Conference's top team on Friday afternoon.
The Chippewas improve to 3-4-3 on the season and own a 2-2-2 mark in the conference. Miami entered the game with a perfect 6-0 slate in the MAC. It is now 6-1-0 in the conference and 8-2-1 overall.
The RedHawks got on the board early, striking in the first 10 minutes of play. However, the Chippewas responded with three goals of their own. Olina Vidarsdottir (Grindavik, Iceland/So.) knotted the game at one in the 14th minute when the ball slipped out of the hands of Miami's goalkeeper,Terry Leigh.
Emilie VilleMonte (Farmington Hills/Sr.) gave CMU the 2-1 halftime lead when Sabrina Borgquist (West Bloomfield/Sr.) set her up for a breakaway at the 40:10 mark. She beat Leigh near side.
Vidarsdottir found pay dirt once again when she headed in the game-winner on an indirect kick from the foot of Katie Conway (Saint Charles, Illinois/Jr.) in the 54th minute.
Miami was able to cut the lead to one in the final five minutes of play but it wasn't enough for the RedHawks.
Kari Alexander stood tall in net for the Chippewas again. The netminder saw 13 shots come her way, nine of which were on net. She made seven saves on the day.
