ROSEMONT, Ill. - DePaul University made short work of Central Michigan University in men's basketball here Saturday afternoon at the Allstate Arena, capturing a 92-56 win.
The Blue Demons are now 2-0 for the season while the Chippewas fall to 2-1.
DePaul, which claimed its 15th straight win in its home opener, grabbed a 16-2 lead and cruised to a 48-22 halftime lead in the non-conference battle.
"It was just one of those games where we couldn't make any early shots," said CMU head coach Jay Smith. "I thought we held the fort on defense but eventually you have to make shots."
The Chippewas shot just 34 percent for the game, meshing 18 of 53 field goals. DePaul, meanwhile, netted 53.4 percent of its shots from the floor.
Freshman sharpshooter Kevin Nelson powered the CMU offense with 13 points, nailing three-of-five shots from behind the three-point line.
"Kevin was one of the bright spots," Smith said. "He came in and hit some open shots."
Also tallying twin figures for the Chippewas were Mike Manciel with 12 and Whitney Robinson 10.
CMU seven-footer Chris Kaman was saddled with three fouls in the first half, and only managed to score six points in the game.
The Blue Demons held a 40-28 edge in rebounding, and had 14 turnovers to CMU's 22. DePaul scored 31 points off of turnovers while the Chippewas netted just 11.
All five starters scored in double digits for DePaul. Delonte Holland led the way with 20 (he hit seven-of-eight) followed by Sam Hoskin with 17.
Smith is anxious to see how his team responds to the lopsided loss when it jumps back into action on Tuesday in Ann Arbor against the University of Michigan. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Wolverines are 0-4 after losing at home on Saturday to Western Michigan, 56-52.
