16th-Ranked Chippewas Fall In Semifinals of MAC Tourney

OXFORD, OHIO - The 16th-ranked Central Michigan University field hockey team's (14-7, 7-3 Mid-American Conference) season came to a dramatic end Saturday afternoon, falling to No. 9 Kent State, 3-2, in double overtime in the MAC tournament semifinals.
The Chippewas fell behind by two goals before turning it on late in the second half.
With less than eight minutes remaining, Kristy Reed scored her 13th goal of the season on a penalty corner to cut the defecit to one. Five minutes later, Jocelyn Gates notched the game-tying goal with only two-and-a-half minutes left.
Maria Neiswender assisted on both CMU goals.
Newly crowned MAC "Freshman of the Year," Tess Meuleman scored the game winner with seven-and-a-half minutes left in the second extra session.
It was the third time this season that the Chippewas and Goden Flashes have needed exta time to decide a winner, twice going into double overtime. Kent State has won two of the three.
The Chippewas still may receive an at-large bid into the 16-team field in the NCAA tournament. The chosen teams will be announced on Sunday, October 10.
