ROCHESTER, Mich. - Central Michigan University swept a non-conference doubleheader with Oakland University here Saturday, winning 6-2 and 5-3.
The Chippewas are now 9-3 for the season and Oakland is now 1-12.
Central broke a 1-1 tie in the nightcap with a run in the fifth on an infield single by Steve Sanfilippo that scored Scott Pickens who had reached base on a single.
The two teams scored solo runs in the second, CMU's coming on a bases-loaded doubleplay grounder off the bat of Bud Mittleman.
Central added three more runs in the top of the sixth, two on a single by Pickens. Keith Sampsell drove in the third tally with a double inside the bag at third.
CMU used eight different pitchers in game two. Starter Dan Horvath went the first two while the others each went one inning apiece. Joey Fahndrich collected his first collegiate win, striking out two in a scoreless fourth. Travis Osborn struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth for his third save of the young season.
The Chippewas scored all six of their runs in the first three frames of game one and rode solid pitching to make them stand up.
Bases-loaded walks to Dan Griesbaum and Pickens plated two runs in the first while Tom Grzywacz stole home in the second. CMU tallied three runs in the third, two on a single by Tim Bullinger and another on a sacrifice fly by Travis Osborn.
Four different CMU hurlers combined to hold Grizzlie batters to four hits. Chad Pleiness made his 2002 debut with three hitless innings as the starter to gain the win. He fanned six and walked two. Jeff Garner allowed two runs in two innings, one being earned. Jason Cairns and T.J. Johnson each hurled a scoreless inning to finish the game.
Tim Groves and Bullinger paced the Chippewas with two hits each.
The Chippewas play a four-game series at Minnesota this Friday-Sunday. The games will be in the Metro Dome.
