Over the past four seasons, fans of Central Michigan basketball have seen the transformation of David Webber from a young man and a shy player who was known more for his brother's accolades then is own, to a confident man who will go down in the books as one of the best players ever to wear the Maroon and Gold.
Even though much of his success is due to his work ethic and faith, Webber will be the first one to pass off praise to the people that helped him get to where he is today.
"I have to give a lot of credit to Coach (Jay) Smith because he gave me the opportunity to become successful and a lot of college players never get that opportunity," David said. "Teddy Baggett and Todd Simmons also taught me a lot about working hard and playing with my heart. They always told me to play my hardest because if I didn't, I was wasting the talent that God gave me."
Another major change with David that has occurred during his CMU career is his ability to deal with his older brother Chris' fame. When he got to Central, David hated talking about Chris, but now he talks about Chris with the love and respect the two share for each other.
"It was tough for me to be Chris' brother when I first got to Central. But, now I have formed my own identity and I am at total peace with myself," said the Farmington Hills native. "Chris is a great brother and has helped me out so much throughout my career that I will never be able to thank him enough. He has always told me that God will never put me in a situation that I couldn't handle and to just always trust God and he will lead me to do the right thing."
The decision that David made when he decided to come to CMU was one that changed his life forever.
"This is the perfect place for me and that is why God told me to go here," said the 6-3 guard. "I trusted him and he showed me the way. I am sure if I had gone to another school you would have never heard of David Webber."
The next hurdle in David's career path is professional basketball and it is a challenge he is ready and prepared for.
"I feel that the maturity and experience that I have gained here at Central will prepare me for the next level," said David. "I know there are some things I need to work on but I feel I can meet the challenges. The possibility of playing with Chris would be unbelievable and hopeful one day I will have that chance."
David has one more message he would like to send out to all the CMU fans and Rose Rowdies. "I will never forget the fans here at CMU and I hope they know how much they have helped me in my career," said Webber. "They have given me the confidence to be successful here at CMU and their kind words on and off the court really mean a lot to me. I really appreciate all the things they have done for me."
