PLANT CITY, Fla - The Central Michigan softball team completed its spring trip with two losses this afternoon.
Central wrapped up pool play with a 4-0 loss to the No. 13-ranked Florida Atlantic University. It returned to action in single-elimination tourney play with a first-round loss to BYU, 5-2.
The Chippewas fall to 11-9 overall.
CMU wrapped up play losing its first-round, single-elimination tournament game against Brigham Young. BYU got on the board with a run in each of the first five innings. Central finally responded with a run in the third inning. After a one-out double by Sarah Hamilton, Jennifer Skuta belted a line shot past the shortstop that brought Hamilton home. The Chippewas threatened in the fourth when Christin Sobeck laid down a textbook bunt to advance runners to second and third with one out. But, they were just two of six runners stranded on base for the game. Skuta put up the second Chippewa run with a solo shot to center in the fifth.
Amber Puchalski got the start, with three of her four runs unearned. She served up two homeruns to Cougar batters and struck out five of them. Jenni Rasmussen came on in relief in the fifth and pitched three innings of ball.
Skuta was 2-for-2 with both RBI while Sobeck was 1-for-2 at the plate. Karly McCormack , Horvath and Hamilton tallied the other three hits.
The Chippewas wrapped up pool play with a 4-0 loss to the No. 13-ranked Florida Atlantic Owls earlier this morning. The Owls tallied all four runs in the third inning. Twice the Chippewas moved runners into scoring position but couldn't move the runners any farther. Central left four runners stranded on the base. Wendy Stephens got the start and the loss while Jenni Rasmussen came in to pitch four and two-thirds innings of relief ball.
Michelle Brander, Lindsay Horvath and Stephens each accounted for the three Chippewa hits. All three were 1-for-3 at the plate.
