MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan Softball fell to Michigan 8-1 on Tuesday afternoon in its only non-conference home game this season. The loss drops CMU to 20-17, while the Wolverines move to 27-15.
Central Michigan Softball welcomed two legends of the game to Margo Jonker Stadium on Tuesday including former CMU head coach and stadium namesake and former Michigan coach Carol Hutchins. The duo threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
The game was the first meeting between the two teams in Mount Pleasant since 2019.
How the Game Happened
Michigan took the lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly after the bases became loaded with two singles and a hit batter.
CMU's Jenna Kuzara recorded the first hit of the game for the Chippewas in the three-spot in the lineup but was stranded on base in the first.
Michigan tacked on two more runs in the second inning with a home run and an RBI triple.
Mackenzie Langan then worked a 1-2-3 inning in the third and was relieved by Aubrey Strelow in the top of the fourth with runners on second and third and ended the inning with a strikeout to leave the bases loaded.
London Williams and Alexa Carter charted back-to-back hits in the bottom of the fourth.
In the fifth, Strelow struck out the leadoff hitter and worked a no-hit inning.
Michigan broke it open in the top of the sixth scoring five runs on a grand slam and an RBI triple.
Cierra Laska entered to pitch in the sixth when the bases were loaded, and Brooklyn Compau entered to issue the final out via fly ball.
London Williams then hit her fifth home run of the season into the trees behind the stadium in the bottom of the sixth to keep CMU away from a run-rule loss.
Compau stayed in to pitch in the top of the seventh and struck out the side.
Ashley Bila charted a pinch hit single in the bottom of the inning but was stranded on base.
Mackenzie Langan took the loss for CMU throwing 3.2 innings with three strikeouts across 19 batters faced. The pitching staff combined for eight strikeouts on the day, two for Strelow and three for Compau over her four batters faced.
Next up, CMU travels to Buffalo to play the Bulls in a Mid-American Conference matchup on Friday and Saturday.
