AKRON, Ohio - Central Michigan University jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first and rode the superb pitching of Dan Horvath to a 14-3 Mid-American Conference win here Friday afternoon over the University of Akron.
CMU is now 15-6 for the season and 5-0 in MAC action. Akron is 6y-12 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
The Chippewas jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first, the rally starting after two were out. Scott Pickens drove in the first run on a bunt single and then Ryan Krueger ripped his first homer of the season - a grand slam.
Central made it 8-0 in the third, scoring three on an infield single by Krueger, a sacrifice fly by David Latour and an infield single by Steve Sanfilippo to chase Zip starter Ben McCauley.
CMU turned to the long ball again in the fourth when Keith Sampsell blasted his third home run of the season, a three-run shot to left.
The Chippewas picked up a solo marker in the fifth on a bounce out by Tommy Grubb and then added two more in the sixth on singles by Pickens and Sanfilippo.
Horvath lost his bid for Central's first shutout of the season in the eighth when Akron's Darek Stanfield and Ryan Brickwood had back-to-back doubles.
The two teams will be back in action here Saturday for a pair of games beginning at 1 p.m.
