MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Central Michigan University women's soccer team brought plenty of offense on Sunday afternoon but couldn't capitalize on its chances. The Northern Illinois Huskies were able to escape Mount Pleasant with the 1-0 win, their first Mid-American Conference win on the season.
The Chippewas fall to 2-4-3 on the season and own a 1-2-2 mark in MAC play.
One goal proved to be the difference in the match. NIU's Akiko Iwabuchi put a bouncing ball over the head of CMU goalkeeper Kari Alexander (Midland/Jr.) in the 56th minute of play. Denise Papke got the lone assist as she lobbed a pass over the CMU defenders for Iwabuchi.
CMU had plenty of offense on the afternoon with 17 shots, nine of which were on net. The Chippewas held on to the advantage in cornerkicks as well, launching 12 to Northern Illinois' one. However, NIU netminder Leigh Steigerwald was solid in net making six first-half saves and three in the second half.
The Chippewas return to action next Friday, October 4, when they play at Oxford, Ohio, against the MAC's top team, Miami. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
