MOUNT PLEASANT - Marshall University midfielder Sarah Gupton netted a goal in the game's final two minutes to lift the Thundering Herd past the Central Michigan University women's soccer team here on Sunday afternoon, 3-2.
The Chippewas fall to 6-5-2 overall and are at .500 in the Mid-American Conference at 4-4-1. The Herd bags their second win for the season. They are 2-11-1 in all games and are 2-6-0 in MAC play.
Just 13 minutes after CMU erased a two-goal deficit, the Thundering Herd got the break they needed to collect a MAC victory. As Gupton raced to corral the pass from Cara Hemmerich, CMU netminder raced out to smother the ball. Gupton won the race and slipped the ball past Decker for the match-winner at 88:09.
The Chippewas had spotted the visitors a two-goal lead in the first half. But, Stacy Downing headed the ball into the net twice in the second stanza to knot the game at two. Her first goal of the game came in the 65th minute of play. She headed a cross in from Rachel Snyder to cut MU's lead in half.
Downing knotted the game at two when she headed a cornerkick in the net from Jacqui Lorenzo at the 76-minute mark.
Stacy Wells broke the scoreless tie, giving Marshall a 1-0 lead at the 24:10 mark. Hemmerich posted what appeared to be the insurance goal in the 38th minute.
CMU took the loss despite out shooting its rival. The Maroon and Gold had 22 shots on the afternoon and Marshall only fired 11. The Chippewas had 12 shots on goal to Marshall's seven.
This afternoon marked the final regular season home match for CMU's seven seniors. Jill Adams, Kari Alexander, Katie Conway, Lorenzo, Cari VanDyck, Becky Wesmer, and Jennifer Williamson were all honored in a pregame ceremony.
CMU will return to action this Friday when it plays MAC rival Akron at Akron, Ohio. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
