Soccer Snags Valuable MAC Victory

AKRON, Ohio - The Central Michigan University women's soccer team picked up a key Mid-American Conference victory on Friday night, topping Akron, 4-3.
The loss dropped Akron to 5-7-1, 4-5-0 MAC while CMU improved to 7-5-1, 5-4-1.
UA opened the night's scoring early, when Jeannie Stuckey finished a pass from Nicole Meiler at the 3:54 mark. CMU evened things at 10:43, thanks to an unassisted score by Alison Heydorn.
Stacy Downing gave the Chippewas the lead for good when she found the twine at the 48:30 mark. Downing's score came on a breakaway opportunity into an open net. Downing also set up the match-winning goal. At 66:58, Downing found Ashleigh Burke on the left side of the net.
Also netting a goal for the Chippewas wasKatie Dolata at 32:53. Her tally in the first half gave the Chippewas a brief lead, but the Zips' Naomi Cummings provided the equalizer at 38:50.
UA had a couple of chances late to tie things, but was unable to convert. CMU controlled the ball and momentum for the majority of the final 10 minutes of play.
CMU fired more shots than Akron, 22-12, including a advantage in shots on goal. The Chippewas took six corner kicks to the Zips two.
The Chippewas return to action on Sunday when they play at Michigan. Kickoff of the nonconference matchup is slated for noon.
