DeKALB, Ill. - The Central Michigan University soccer team improved its chances of making it to the Mid-American Conference postseason tournament with a 2-0 win over the Northern Illinois Huskies on Friday evening.
CMU ups its record to 8-6-2 overall. Its record in MAC play improves to 6-4-1. The Huskie mark falls to 3-13-1 for the season and is 1-9-1 in conference tilts.
It was the effort of two freshmen that lifted the Maroon and Gold to victory. On offense, rookie Jacquie Lacek netted two goals in the first half. It was all the offense the Chippewas needed to put away the Huskies.
At 16:23, Ashleigh Burke coralled an errant clearing pass and found Lacek on the left side. Lacek dribbled around one defender and found the back of the net from seven yards out . Lacek etched her name in the box score again when netminder Anne Decker punted the ball up field. Midfielder Alison Heydorn headed a pass to a streaking Lacek who bagged her second goal at 30:35, this time from 15 yards out.
Lacek paced the Chippewas with seven shot, four of them on net. Midfilders Laura Roberts and Jill Adams had their chances as well. Roberts finished with five shots and Adams with three. In all, CMU had 28 shots with seven of them landing on net. CMU outshot NIU in the second stanza, 16-3.
The other standout freshman performance came from first-year netminder Decker, who collected her fourth shutout for the season. She faced six shots and had to turn away two shots on goal.
The Chippewas round out action this week with their final MAC game for the season. CMU will play at Western Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 26. Match time in Kalamazoo is set for noon.
