MOUNT PLEASANT -- Freshman halfback Jerry Seymour raced for a career-high 207 yards to lead Central Michigan University to a 38-10 Mid-American Conference football victory over Eastern Michigan University here Saturday afternoon.
The win ended a five-game losing skid for the Chippewas, raising their record to 3-6 overall and 1-5 in MAC action. The Eagles dropped their eighth straight game, falling to 1-8 and 0-5.
CMU spotted EMU a 10-0 lead with 14:57 remaining in first half before roaring back with 38 unanswered points.
Seymour, a 5-6 dynamo nicknamed "Bam Bam," was a major factor in the comeback. He carried 36 times and scored a career-high three touchdowns.
"It's amazing watching him play," said CMU head coach Mike DeBord. "Thank goodness he's going to be wearing our uniform for three more years."
The score was deadlocked at 10-10 at the half when Seymour scampered 14 yards for a TD to put the Chippewas ahead, 17-10, with 11:03 to go in the third period.
CMU senior quarterback Derrick Vickers gave his team a 24-10 lead when he completed a 12-yard pass to Troy Peyerk with 23 seconds to play in the period.
Seymour closed the scoring with a pair of TD runs in the fourth period of 16 and 15 yards.
Vickers had his best performance of the season with 18 completions in 24 tries for 185 yards and two touchdowns without an interception.
"Derrick was having fun out there today," said DeBord. "He made some great plays. He should have great confidence for the rest of our games.
Vickers also tossed a 29-yard scoring aerial to freshman tight end Joe Staley, one of nine receivers he found during the gamed.
CMU will close the home portion of the 2003 season with a game against the University of Akron next Saturday before going to Western Michigan and Navy.
