MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan University women's soccer team performed one of a handful of upsets this afternoon in the Mid-American Conference Tournament first round.
The No. 5-seed Chippewas upset the No. 4-seed Ball State Cardinals, 2-0, in Muncie, Ind., to advance to the semifinals of the MAC tourney.
Bowling Green, the No. 8 seed, stunned Eastern Michigan this afternoon. The top-seeded Eagles fell to the Falcons, 2-1. BGSU and CMU will square off in the first semifinal match on Friday in Kalamazoo.
The only higher seeded team to win was Western Michigan, who will host the semifinal and final matches this Friday and Sunday. No. 3 Western topped the No. 6-seed Buffalo, 3-0. The second seed, Kent State, also fell to No. 7 Ohio, 1-0.
Rachel Snyder and Alison Heydorn lifted the Chippewas past Ball State. Snyder got the match-winner in the eighth minute of play. That was Snyder's second match-winning goal this season. Heydorn put the insurance goal on the board late in the game in the 82nd minute of play.
Netminder Anne Decker continued to shine between the pipes. She stopped all eight of BSU's shots and turned in her fifth shutout this season.
The Chippewas are in the MAC tournament for the fifth time in the program's six-year history. This is the third time that they have advanced to the tournament's second round. CMU was in the semifinals in 1999 and advanced to the tournament finals in 2001.
