Central Michigan at Michigan
Chippewa Notes
*The crowd of 110,637 fans in Michigan Stadium not only was the biggest that CMU ever played in front of but it was the largest crowd ever to see a Mid-American Conference school in action.
*Chippewa senior halfback Terrence Jackson carried 21 times for 104 yards to power the offense; Jackson rushed for 100 yards or more in seven games in 2001 but managed the feat just once a year ago in a season hampered by foot injuries.
*Junior QB Jeff Perry was solid in his career debut; he completed 18-of-29 passes for 150 yards with one interception.
*Senior Willie Hill and sophomore Justin Harper caught five passes each to lead CMU; Hill grabbed his for 53 yards and Harper 24.
*Harper also returned five kickoffs for 86 yards and brought a punt back 12 more yards.
*The Chippewas got outstanding play from junior strong safety James King; the 6-1, 215-pounder had 18 solo tackles and an assist to finish with 19 stops; he also had a pass deflection.
*Senior linebacker Eddie Hillery claimed the second interception of his career, returning a John Navarre pass 21 yards; he also forced a fumble that UM recovered.
*True freshman Jerry Seymour had an impressive collegiate debut, rushing 14 times for 64 yards, one a 26-yarder.
*Senior Kenan Lawhorne scored CMU's lone TD with a 27-yard scamper in the third period that cut the deficit to 17-7; Lawhorne broke a number of tackles on the run and finished the game with seven carries for 42 yards.
*CMU managed 368 yards in total offense, 219 coming on the ground.
*The Chippewas are now 2-11 all-time against Big Ten foes, dropping to 0-2 against the Wolverines; UM defeated CMU in 1931, 27-0.
*True freshman tight end Joe Staley also saw action and caught one pass for 18 yards and a first down in CMU's 92-yard scoring drive to open the second half.
*Another true freshman played when place-kicker Matt Foster was used to kickoff for the Chippewas.
*CMU opens the home portion of the 2003 season with a pair of games in Kelly/Shorts Stadium - Sept. 6 against New Hampshire and Sept. 13 against Eastern Kentucky.
