FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- It was a pair of freshmen that stepped up late in the match to tally the game-tying goal for the Central Michigan University women's soccer team. However, 110 minutes of play wasn't enough to settle the match with Idaho that ended in a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon in Flagstaff, Ariz.
CMU is now 0-1-1 for the season while Idaho escapes with a 0-0-2 season tally.
Chippewa forward Alison Heydorn knotted the game at one apiece at the 88-minute mark when she found the back of the net off of fellow classmate Jacquie Lacek's cornerkick. It was Heydorn's first career goal and Lacek's first career assist.
In overtime, Idaho's two shots sailed wide. However, Vandel goalkeeper Kim Carey had to be on her toes to make eight saves for the game, two of them in the second overtime.
Idaho got on the board first. In the 70th minute of play, Emily Nelson beat Chippewa netminder Anne Decker, knocking in a cross from Sarah April. Nelson fired a game-high six shots, almost half of the Vandels' 13 shots for the game.
The Maroon and Gold launched 16 shots on the afternoon, eight of which landed on net. Stacy Downing had a team-high four shots while Lacek was right behind her with three.
Kari Alexander started the match and played the first half, making one save. Decker came in at the half and played the remainder of the minutes. She made two saves in 65 minutes of work.
The Chippewas return to the soccer field this Friday, September 5, when they play at Cincinnati. Match time is set for 6 p.m.
