Cross Country Takes Second At Cross Country Festival

CARY, N.C. -- The Central Michigan University men's cross country proved that it is one of the top programs in the country when it took second at the Great American Cross Country Festival's 8k Nike Race of Champions in Cary, N.C., on Friday afternoon.
Northern Arizona, the No. 3-ranked team in the nation, was the only team to top the Chippewas. The Lumberjacks were first with 114 points. CMU claimed second with 122 points. CMU also upset the No. 6-ranked Michigan Wolverines who were fourth with 145 points.
All five of CMU's scorers were in the top 40. Leading the way for the Maroon and Gold were Tristen Perlberg and Jeff Davis. Perlberg paced the Chippewas with a 10th-place finish in 26:03. Davis, only two slots behind Perlberg at 12, ran the race in 26:08.
Following Davis was Jacques Henning who checked in at 25th in 26:24. The remaining scorers were Don Wilkins (35th, 26:30) and Rick Bauer (40th, 26:42).
Also racing were Ron Miller (80th, 27:32) and Jake Flynn (81st, 27:32).
Travis Laird from NAU was the meet champion. He won the race in 25:33, seven seconds ahead of Villanova's Jon Fasula (25:40).
Other nationally-ranked teams competing were: No. 20 Ohio State (third); No. 10 Villanova (sixth); No. 30 Texas A&M (seventh); No. 14 North Carolina State (eighth); No. 27 Duke (ninth); and No. 22 Butler (13th).
