Broncos Spoil Volleyball's Senior Night

MOUNT PLEASANT - Senior night didn't provide the Central Michigan University volleyball team enough inspiration as the Chippewas fell to rival Western Michigan, 3-0, on Friday night in Rose Arena.
Game scores were 30-28, 30-19 and 30-20.
The Chippewas finish the MAC regular season 3-13 while Western Michigan improves to 10-5 in league play with a match against Eastern Michigan tomorrow night. CMU will be the No. 12 seed in the MAC Tournament which begins Tuesday at campus sites. The Chippewas close the regular season with a nonconference match against Valparaiso on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Broncos used a balanced offensive attack and advantages in hitting percentage, blocks and service aces to net the victory.
WMU hit .225 and tallied 11 blocks and nine aces compared to CMU's .064 attack percentage, five blocks and five aces.
Senior Emily Lovejoy led the Chippewa attack with 13 kills and Meghan Moore provided 11 and three block assists.
Abby Gephart paced the Broncos with 10 kills while Schea Fissel had a match-high 14 digs defensively.
CMU actually led game one, 25-20, but WMU went on a 10-3 run to take the opener. The Chippewas held Western Michigan, the MAC's second-best hitting team, to a .111 attack percentage in game one. However, the Broncos picked up their efficiency in the next two games while CMU's aim dropped considerably. The Chippewas hit .122 in game one but .059 in game two and .000 in the finale. Much of that had to do with Western's defense which notched six blocks in game three alone.
Ali McCrite and Mary Ochmanek each had eight digs while CMU spilt time between setters Courtney Kersten and Jaimeson Whitman. Kersten got the start and she handed out 23 assists while Whitman distributed three assists in two games.
Kristy Ramsey had nine kills in the winning effort while Shaylen Jackson added eight for the Broncos. WMU's Jessica Holly had a great all-around match with 32 assists, three kills, five aces and nine digs.
