Chippewas Claim 70-60 Victory

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Outstanding free throw shooting helped Central Michigan University rally from a six-point halftime deficit to claim a 70-60 nonleague win over Saginaw Valley State University here Saturday afternoon.
The Chippewas meshed 39-of-47 foul shots (80.6 percent) including 29-of-36 in the second half to raise their record to 2-1 for the season. The Cardinals are now 3-1.
Down by a 31-25 margin at the half, CMU took the lead for good in the second half, 45-44, with 9:47 remaining on a pair of free throws by Kevin Nelson.
The Chippewas extended their advantage to as many as 16 points, 60-44, with 4:17 to play before settling for 10-point decision.
Senior Tony Bowne led CMU with a game-high 18 points, hitting 9-of-12 free throws. Freshman Giordan Watson was next with 15, netting 9-of-10 at the stripe, while senior Robert Sevalia came off the bench to score 14, hitting 8-of-9 at the line.
CMU hit 15-of-38 from the floot for 39.5 percent compared to the Cardinals' 22-of-54 for 40.7 percent. SVSU held a 33-32 edge in rebounding but the visitors also had 20 turnovers to 14 for the Chippewas. CMU had just four miscues in the second half while SVSU had 13.
Sydney McDaniel powered the Cardinals with 14 followed by Rojelio Grady with 11 and Kenneth Nether 10. Nether also had a game-high 10 rebounds. Tops for CMU were Steve Harris and Watson with six each.
The Chippewas open Mid-American Conference action at Kent State on Wednesday night. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
CMU's next home action will be on Dec. 4 when Rochester College comes to Rose Arena. It will be the second part of a doubleheader with the Chippewa women meeting Wright State at 2 p.m.
