MOUNT PLEASANT -- Casey Manning powered the Central Michigan University women's basketball team to a 74-63 nonconference overtime triumph over Wright State here Saturday afternoon.
The 5-9 junior poured in 24 points and snatched 12 rebounds, both career high, as the Chippewas overcame an eight-point deficit late in the game for the win.
CMU is now 4-2 for the season while the Raiders fall to 3-2.
The Chippewas were down by a 54-46 margin with 4:32 remaining before tying it at 58-58 on a jumper by Chasidy Myers with 39 seconds to play.
As the score would indicate, CMU dominated the overtime session. A free throw by Myers and a three-pointer by Manning put CMU ahead for good, 62-58, with 4:19 remaining.
An overpowering performance on the backboards was a key factor in the win. CMU had 52 rebounds, 25 of them offensive, to 34 for Wright State. Backing Manning's dozen was 6-2 freshman Dana Westover with 11.
Myers was the only other Chippewa in double digits with 10.
CMU got a big lift off the bench from 5-9 freshman Stacey Verhoff who came up with nine points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in 23 minutes.
Wright State was led by Jeannette Woodberry with 17 points, Angie Ott 13 and Rhea Mays 11.
CMU shot only 35.3 percent from the field, meshing 24-of-68. However, it did hit 22-of-28 free throws for 78.6 percent.
Next up for the Chippewas is a road date on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at Valparaiso. The last home game of 2004 is slated for Sunday, Dec. 12, when Illinois-Chicago comes to Rose Arena for a game at 2 p.m.
