Baseball Doubles Up Redbirds, 6-3

NORMAL, Ill. - It was a tight game for the first six innings but the Central Michigan University baseball team doubled up host Illinois State, 6-3, on Friday afternoon at Redbird Field.
CMU held a 1-0 lead through six frames before tacking on three runs in the seventh inning and another two more in the ninth. The Redbirds scored once in the seventh and twice more in the eighth to draw within one, 4-3, heading into the final inning.
But, David LeMieux came on for his second save of the season and threw 1.1 innings of hitless relief after starter Jayson Ruhlman went 7.2 innings for the win.
The Chippewas (5-9) tallied 11 hits in the contest and committed one error while ISU (4-7) had seven hits and three errors that led to two unearned runs.
Redbird pitcher Ned Schauff took the loss, going 5.0 innings and allowing just one run in the first. ISU used five different pitchers in the contest.
Ruhlman gave up seven hits and three runs, all earned. He struck out four to improve to 2-1.
Junior Kurtis Wells went 3-for-5 and drove in half of CMU's runs. He had an RBI single in the first and seventh innings and a fielder's choice RBI in the ninth.
The top two batters in CMU's order, Eric Cannon and Jim Geldhof, each went 2-for-4.
The Chippewas and Redbirds will continue a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday with nine-inning single games beginning both days at 1 p.m. (CST).
