Brigitha Named Men's Hoops MVP

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Senior Gerrit Brigitha was named the Most Valuable Player at the 2003-04 Central Michigan University men's basketball team banquet on Sunday.
The 6-8 center was the only Chippewa to start every game this year and he averaged team highs of 17.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Brigitha shot .570 from the floor to lead the Mid-American Conference. He scored in double figures 24 times and tallied four double-doubles.
Others receiving awards were: Student-Athlete Award, Brandon Voorhees; Brent Edwards Memorial/Unsung Player Award, Tom Pantlind; Inspirational Player Award, Dan Quinn; Most Improved Player Award, Sefton Barrett; and Defensive Player Award, Rob Sevalia.
Voorhees sports a team-high 3.54 grade point average. The sophomore played in only 19 games this season because of injury. He averaged 7.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
Pantlind averaged 0.6 points and 0.6 rebounds per game but he made other key contributions to the team.
Quinn, a senior, played significant minutes in three of CMU's final six games. He tallied six points and five rebounds in a win over Evansville.
Barrett averaged just 2.2 points and 1.8 rebounds during the first 15 games of the season but made significant contributions of 6.9 points and 4.1 rebounds in the final 15 games. The freshman scored in double figures in four of the Chippewas' final five contests.
Sevalia, a junior college transfer, tallied 19 steals on the year and grabbed 52 rebounds.
CMU student Steve Schwanda received the Rose Rowdie "Sixth Man of the Year" Award for the second straight season.
