CHICAGO, Ill. -- Bryan Mitzel and Kurtis Wells powered Central Michigan University to a 15-6 baseball win over Chicago State here Monday afternoon.
Mitzel homered and drove in five runs while Wells homered and plated four more markers. It was Mitzel's ninth round-tripper of the season and No. 6 for Wells.
The win evened CMU's record at 20-20 while the Cougars fell to 5-37.
Jeff Opalewski was the starter and winner for the Chippewas, upping his record to 3-1. He went the first six innings, allowing nine hits and six earned runs. He walked two and fanned seven.
James Ricchio collected his first career save with three shutout innings. He allowed just one hit over that stretch and struck out three against one walk.
CMU broke it open with seven runs in the second and six more in the fifth, seven of them off the starter and loser Jonathan Duncan (0-6).
Mitzel was four-for-four while Wells had three hits in four at bats. Also recording two hits were Eric Cannon (one RBI), Jim Geldhof (two), J.T. Jones and Derek Schaller (two). Jeremy Crum was one-for-one with three walks and three runs scored.
The Chippewas finished with 18 hits while Chicago State had 10.
CMU returns to action on Tuesday with a nine-inning game at Detroit. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
