HUNTINGTON, W. Va. -- Central Michigan University won the first game of a Mid-American Conference baseball series here Friday afternoon with a 7-4 win over Marshall University.
The Chippewas, riding a three-game winning streak, are now 22-20 for the season and 8-5 in the MAC while Marshall falls to 19-23 overall and 3-9 in conference action.
Bryan Mitzel keyed the CMU win with his 11th home run of the season and his third of the week, a two-run shot in the fifth.
CMU scored an unearned run in the first and added two runs in the second,one unearned and the other on an RBI single by Chase Welker. Welker upped the Chippewa advantage to 4-0 in the fourth when he singled, stole second and scored on a single by J.T. Jones.
After the Thundering Herd scored in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-1, Mitzel homered for a 6-1 lead. MU then scored two in the bottom of the fifth and one in the sixth to make it, 6-4.
CMU closed the scoring in the seventh when David Latour Jr. doubled, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Welker.
T.J. Johnson started for the Chippewas and collected the win. He went seven and two-third innings, allowing six hits and four runs (three earned). David LeMieux tossed the final one and one-third innings and gave up just one hit to garner his sixth save of the season.
The Chippewas stole six bases in seven attempts, two each by Eric Cannon and Welker.
CMU outhit Marshall, 9-7, with Welker and Latour each bagging a pair of safeties.
Game two of the set is set for here Saturday at 1 p.m.
