CMU Women Trip Kent State, 58-52

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University captured its first women's basketball win of the Mid-American Conference season with a hard-fought 58-52 win over Kent State University here Wednesday night.
The Chippewas led by as many as 14 points in the first half, 30-16, with 3:21 to play before settling into a 31-24 halftime edge.
The visiting Golden Flashes moved into five-point lead, 46-41, with 6:53 to play before CMU came to life once again. The Chippewas outscored Kent, 17-5, down the stretch.
A layup by Dana Westover with 3:17 to play put CMU ahead for good, 52-50. Lindy Hatfield followed with a jumper and Westover added another basket to put the lead at 56-50 with 25 seconds to go.
After a Kent hoop, Casey Manning closed the scoring with a pair of free throws.
The win upped CMU's record to 7-7 for the season and 1-2 in the MAC while KSU is now 8-6 overall and 1-2 in league action.
Redshirt freshman Dana Westover led CMU with 14 points followed by sophomore Ann Skufca with 11.
Game-high honors went to the Golden Flashes' Lindsay Shearer with 18 while Melissa DeGrate added 14. Shearer also had a game-high 10 rebounds.
CMU shot 50 percent from the field on 25-of-50 compared to Kent's 23-of-61 for 37.7 percent.
Kent won the battle of the backboards, 38-30, but also turned the ball over 17 times to CMU's 14.
Next up for the Chippewas is a road trip to Ohio for a game Saturday at 2 p.m. CMU will return home on Tuesday, Jan. 18, to face Toledo.
