MOUNT PLEASANT -- A 17-0 deficit at the start of the game proved more than Central Michigan University could overcome here Tuesday night in Mid-American Conference women's basketball action.
The University of Toledo jumped out to that 17-0 lead with 12:34 to play in the first half en route to a 64-55 win over CMU.
It did get a little interesting for the Rockets in the second half when the Chippewas cut the margin to two points, 31-29, with 16:54 to play. CMU then missed a layup that would have tied the game.
UT then pulled away and CMU could get no closer than four, 39-35, with 10:42 to go.
The win upped Toledo's record to 7-9 for the season and 3-2 in MAC play. The Chippewas fell to 7-9 and 1-4.
The CMU starters had just nine points, seven by Lindy Hatfield and two for Dana Westover.
The bulk of the scoring came from a trio of reserves, led by freshman Stacey Verhoff with 15. Junior Chasidy Myers and frosh Sharonda Hurd added 11 apiece. Hurd added 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
Game-scoring honors went to Toledo sophomore Danielle Bishop with 29 points including 10-of-10 from the foul line. Karin Hoogendam was the only other Rocket player in twin figures with 11.
After shooting just 23.8 percent in the first half on 5-of-21, CMU bounced back with 14-of-34 in the final half for 41.2 percent. The Chippewas finished the game at 34.5 percent on 19-of-55.
UT hit 46 percent on 23-of-50.
CMU held a 35-29 edge in rebounding but also turned the ball over more, 22-18.
The Chippewas are idle until a Jan. 26 game at Marshall.
