Central Michigan University's trip to the 2003 NCAA Tournament had a significant impact on sophomore guard Sefton Barrett.
"I saw CMU play against Creighton, and I thought to myself 'I could help them, they could use a player like me,'" Barrett said.
A lot of teams could probably use a 6-6 player who can play any of the three backcourt positions effectively, and has a knack for getting to the rim.
"I was only 5-9 when I was younger, so I played a lot of point guard," he said. "That's probably the position I feel most comfortable in." Barrett, who attended Champlain Regional College (the equivalent of a prep school in Canada) for a year before coming to CMU, was also heavily recruited by Western Carolina and Eastern Michigan.
"When I came to Central, the team just made me feel at home," Barrett said. "I loved the coaching staff. No one else was even close."
Barrett, who is a native of Brampton, Ontario, says that the biggest thrill about college basketball is getting to play against the teams that he grew up watching on television.
He lettered as a freshman coming off the bench, and now as a sophomore he has stepped into a more active role (seven starts). The season got off to a rough start for Barrett, however, as he suffered a stress fracture in his foot in the opening game.
"That was very frustrating," he said. "I love watching my teammates play, but it's a lot different when I can't go out there and help them."
Barrett's production has increased significantly since returning from the injury when compared to last year's numbers. Both his points per game and rebounds per game are up.
"I think that comes from having some experience under my belt and getting more consistent minutes," Barrett said.
Barrett, who his teammates say is the best dunker on the team, didn't begin playing organized basketball until late in high school. Originally, his first love was soccer.
He is a physical education major and would like to teach after he finishes college.
