Kent State Blocks Chippewas from Victory, 3-0

MOUNT PLEASANT - Kent State blocked Central Michigan University volleyball from its first Mid-American Conference victory both literally and figuratively on Saturday evening in Rose Arena, winning 3-0 (30-28, 30-27, 30-21).
The Chippewas fall to 3-11 on the year, 0-4 in the MAC while Kent State improves to 6-9, 2-2 in conference play.
One of the deciding factors was KSU's blocking as it tallied 15.5 team blocks and forced CMU to hit just get .083 in the contest. Kista Groce and Ashley Feutz both recorded seven total blocks to lead the Golden Flashes.
One highlight for CMU was libero Ali McCrite as she moved into fourth in the MAC career digs list with 18 on the night. Another highlight was the return of setter Courtney Kersten after missing last night's match. Kersten had 33 assists, seven kills and hit .500 during the match. Alison Baker led CMU nine kills as for the second-straight night the Chippewas didn't have a player reach double-figures in kills.
Danielle Holt led the KSU offense with 14 kills and a .279 hitting percentage. She also tallied 10 digs for a double-double. Anne Butts dished out 43 assists for the Golden Flashes and Laura Jensen had 17 digs to lead the defense.
KSU tallied seven more kills than CMU, 51-44, and outhit the Chippewas, .246-.083. CMU did have two more digs, 47-45, but were outblocked, 15.5-8.5.
The Chippewas return to action next weekend when they host Northern Illinois and Western Michigan. CMU battles Northern Illinois on Friday, Oct. 7, in Rose Arena at 7 p.m.
