CMU Postgame Notes - Oct. 15, 2005 vs. Ohio University
CMU is 3-1 in MAC play for the first time since 1998. The Chippewas' current three-game winning streak is the longest since 2002, when they opened the season 3-0.
The win was CMU's first on Homecoming since 1998 and the 50th all-time Homecoming triumph.
CMU scored on its opening possession for the first time in 2005 when Kent Smith hit Justin Harper with a 10-yard scoring pass just 29 seconds into the contest.
Justin Harper completed his first career pass attempt in the second quarter. He caught a lateral from Kent Smith, then connected with Obed Cetoute for 41 yards.
Damien Linson's 78-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter was his second score on a punt return in his career. He returned a punt 66 yards for a score in 2004 against Southeast Missouri State. His two punt return scores are the only two for CMU since 1982.
Daniel Bazuin recorded three sacks on Saturday, giving him eight in 2005. The CMU single-season record is nine sacks. Bazuin also has 17 career sacks, tied with Bubba Hester for fourth all-time at CMU.
Ohio's Matthew Miller hit his first career field goal, a 26-yarder in the fourth quarter.
The victory was CMU's first at home this season.
The 20 points allowed by CMU in the last two games is the fewest combined points given up by the Chippewas in back-to-back games since 1992 when CMU allowed 16 total points against Miami and Kent State (35-0 win vs. KSU; 16-13 loss vs. Miami).
CMU 3-0 against teams from the state of Ohio this season (Miami, Akron, Ohio).
Kent Smith ran for one TD and threw for two marking his ninth career game with both a rushing and a passing TD.
