YPSILANTI - The visiting Central Michigan University Chippewas went on a 22-7 run to trim a 19-point EMU lead down to two with seven and a half minutes left, but that's as close as CMU could get in a 79-72 loss on Saturday in the Eagles' Convocation Center.
The Chippewas couldn't get the breaks late after going almost five minutes without scoring to start the second half. CMU was within striking distance down 61-56 with 4:49 left when the Eagles got a break in the form of a five-point play. EMU's Michael Ross drilled a three-pointer while at the same time Jeff Bohnhoff was whistled for a foul trying to block out EMU's John Bowler who then went to the line to sink a pair of free throws.
That gave the Eagles some more breathing room but CMU whittled it back down to four points with 1:47 left on a Kevin Nelson three-pointer following an EMU timeout. However, Eastern made its free throw attempts down the stretch to earn the seven-point victory.
The Chippewas fall to 7-15 overall, 2-12 in the MAC while EMU raises its mark to 11-12 overall, 4-9 in the MAC.
Four CMU players hit double figures with Nelson scoring a game-high 18 points, including three three-pointers. Sefton Barrett added 12 points and nine boards while going 10-for-10 from the line and Tom Pantlind tallied a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards (five offensive). Steve Harris scored 10 points, including CMU's first eight of the game.
EMU shot 51 percent for the game going 24-for-47 while CMU was held to a .406 mark hitting 26-of-64. The Maroon and Gold held a 45-25 advantage on the boards after each team grabbed 13 in the first half. The Eagles hit 6-of-9 three-point attempts for 67 percent while the Chippewas once again struggled from the arc going 5-for-21 (.238).
All five EMU starters were in double figures with James Jackson leading the way with 16 points while John Bowler added 15.
The Chippewas turned it over 20 times in the game, 10 in each half.
CMU returns home for three straight games, beginning with rival Western Michigan on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. The game will air throughout Michigan on Comcast Local.
*NOTE*
The Western Michigan game on Tuesday, Feb. 15, was originally scheduled for the following day but has been moved for television. Some early schedules printed by both schools list the wrong day.
