BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Central Michigan University opened the 2005 baseball season with a 7-2 loss here Friday night to the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
Both teams collected nine hits but the Chippewas had four errors that led to three unearned runs.
The Blazers' Adam Price outdueled CMU junior Ty Dunham to claim the win. Price went seven innings, scattering five hits and didn't allow a run. He walked one and fanned five. Dunham also went seven innings and gave up five hits and three runs, one earned. He didn't walk a batter and struck out two.
UAB took a 3-0 lead into the eighth when CMU scored both of its runs on RBI singles by Kurtis Wells and Bryan Mitzel.
However, the Blazers got to relief hurler Mark Lundquist for four runs in one-third of an inning before James Ricchio closed the door.
Mitzel was the lone Chippewa with two hits.
Because of the threat of bad weather on Sunday, CMU will play a doubleheader here on Saturday at 1 p.m.
