MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University had the ball with 10 seconds to play but failed to get a shot off in losing a 68-67 Mid-American Conference women's basketball game to Ball State here Tuesday night.
The Chippewas now face Ohio in the first round of the MAC Tournament. That game will be on Saturday in Athens, Ohio, with tip off set for 2 p.m.
The loss dropped the Chippewas to 10-17 for the season and 4-12 in the MAC. BSU goes to 15-12 overall and 11-5 in league action.
It was also the home finale for CMU's lone senior, Lindy Hatfield. The 5-10 forward responded with a team-high 18 points, including 4-of-10 from behind the three-point line.
CMU also had Casey Manning and Ann Skufca in twin figures with 12 each. Skufca bagged a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds.
Their efforts weren't enough to overcome a 30-point outburst by Ball State senior Kate Endress. Tina Bolte was the only other Cardinal in twin digits with 10.
The Chippewas led by as many as eight points in the second half at 51-43 with 13:25 remaining. However, BSU battled back to take a 68-67 lead with on a short jumper by Endress with 14 seconds to go.
CMU called a timeout with just under 11 seconds to play but ended up turning the ball over while trying to get it inside.
Lost in the final score was one of CMU's top floor efforts of the season. CMU matched its season low in turnovers with nine while forcing BSU into 12 miscues.
The Chippewas held a 37-33 edge in rebounding.
