BRADENTON, Fla. - The Central Michigan University baseball team pushed its winning streak to four games with a blowout victory over Eastern Kentucky on Thursday afternoon, 19-1.
The Chippewas are now 7-5 this season, 4-1 on the spring trip. The squad has won seven of their last eight.
The Maroon and Gold pounded out 15 hits while limiting the Colonels to just six. CMU had one error compared to five for EKU.
CMU held a 3-0 lead entering the fourth inning when Brian Mitzel's three-run homer helped start a run that saw the Chippewas score 12 runs over the next three innings. That run included five runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Third baseman Troy Moratti had an all-around outstanding game, going 4-for-4 with four runs and five RBI. Leftfielder Jim Geldhof also drove in five runs while adding a pair of hits and one run scored.
Ryan Peel tallied three hits and three runs scored for CMU while J.T. Jones also crossed home three times and plated two more runs.
The Chippewas got a strong pitching performance from junior right-hander Ty Dunham. Dunham limited the Colonels to no runs with four hits in seven innings of action. He struck out five while walking four. Freshman left-hander Josh Ruhlman came on in relief to begin the eighth, limiting EKU to just one run and two hits in the final two frames. He struck out three while walking just one.
The Chippewas are back in action tomorrow, March 11, when they take on Rhode Island beginning at 10:30 a.m.
