CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Penn State continued its success against Central Michigan University with a 2-0 victory on Sunday morning to wrap up action at the Speedline Invitational. It marked the third time during the Florida trip that the Chippewas (6-7) fell to the Nittany Lions (10-7).
PSU broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth with a one-hit inning that pushed across a pair of runs. Jessica Garvin issued two walks in the frame and the only hit was a two-out double that scored both batters who walked.
CMU outhit Penn State, 5-3, and the Nittany Lions committed the game's only error. However, the Chippewas stranded six runners while being shut out.
Leadoff batter Karen Hohs went 2-for-2 and Amy Hudson, Stephanie Crews and Katie Horvath each added hits.
Garvin took the loss throwing all six innings and allowing three hits and both runs. She struck out six and walked two.
The Chippewas now return home where they hope to open the home season on March 22 with a nonleague doubleheader against Oakland.
