CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Southeast Missouri State held Central Michigan University to a single-digit hit total for the first time in CMU's last six games as the Redhawks defeated the Chippewas, 4-3, in game two of the weekend series at Capaha Field.
CMU's loss snaps a seven-game winning streak and the Chippewas will look to start another string again tomorrow when the two teams play a rubber match on Sunday at 1 p.m. (CST).
CMU (10-6) tallied just seven hits after averaging 15.8 in the previous five contests. SEMO (7-10) countered with 11 hits as both teams committed an error apiece.
After the Chippewas broke a scoreless game with two runs in the fourth, the Redhawks responded with one run in the bottom of the inning and another two in the fifth to take a 3-2 advantage. CMU tied it in the sixth but SEMO plated the game-winner in the seventh.
Jason Cairns (2-2) took the loss going six and a third innings allowing 10 hits and all four runs. He struck out six. Mark Lundquist came on and faced two batters before James Ricchio closed the final one and a third.
Reliever Josh Parham earned the win to improve to 1-1 on the year. He threw the sixth and seventh innings after Andrew Johnson went the first five allowing all three of the Chippewas' runs (two earned).
Seven different CMU players tallied hits in the game with no Chippewa posting more than one. Kurtis Wells and Ryan Peel each drove in runs.
The Maroon and Gold got on the board in the fourth when Jim Geldhof singled to start the inning and Bryan Mitzel followed with a double. Wells then grounded to short where a fielding error allowed both Geldof and Mitzel to score as Wells was credited with one RBI.
Wells led the sixth off with a double to right center and he scored on a Peel RBI single up the middle.
SEMO's game-winning run scored in the seventh on a one-out sacrifice fly.
