MOUNT PLEASANT -- A pair of true freshmen combined on a three-hit shutout here Tuesday afternoon as Central Michigan University posted a 6-0 baseball win in its home opener against Wayne State University.
The Chippewas are now 14-7 for the season while the Warriors fall to 9-7. CMU returns to action here on Wednesday against Oakland University at 3 p.m.
Frosh right-hander Josh Colmenter went the first seven innings against WSU to collect his first win against no losses. He allowed just two hits while striking out eight and walking none.
Frosh lefty Josh Ruhlman went the final two frames, He gave up one hit and walked two and struck out two.
Bryan Mitzel paced the Chippewa hitting attack that produced 13 safeties. The sophomore outfielder had three hits, two of them doubles, and drove in three runs.
Senior Kurtis Wells had two hits and an RBI and freshman catcher Tyler Stovall added two as did junior second baseman Troy Moratti.
After starting the season 0-4, the Chippewas have gone 14-3. CMU opens Mid-American Conference action this weekend at Bowling Green.
