ORLANDO, Fla. - Penn State put together four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to push across three runs in a 3-0 shutout of Central Michigan University on Friday morning at the UCF Tournament. It was CMU's first game of its 10-day Florida trip.
Starting pitcher Jessica Garvin gave up a leadoff double in the fourth followed by a single and a walk which loaded the bases with nobody out. After Garvin got the next batter to strikeout, the following Lion player hit a grounder to second where Karen Hohs nailed the runner at third trying to score. However, the Chippewas gave up a pair of singles after that which cleared the bags for the only scoring of the game.
CMU managed just three hits off PSU pitcher Missy Beseres who improved to 2-1. She fanned 11 Chippewas.
Garvin took the loss (1-1) after giving up seven hits and walking four. She fanned five. Sophomore Jill DeRoche pitched the final inning.
Hohs, Lindsey Calme and freshman Amy Hudson all had singles for CMU.
CMU will face host UCF later today at 1 p.m.
