ORLANDO, Fla. - A 4-1 victory over Michigan State snapped a three-game losing skid for the Central Michigan University softball team as the Chippewas went 1-1 on Saturday at the UCF Tournament in Orlando, Fla.
CMU began the day with a 5-1 loss to Eastern Kentucky before bouncing back to defeat the Spartans thanks to a four-run sixth inning.
In the opener, the Chippewas trailed 2-1 heading into the top of the sixth when Jill DeRoche was brought in to relieve freshman pitcher Amy Candioto who gave up two earned runs in 5.0 innings of work. A fielding error allowed the Colonels to score a pair of unearned runs in the sixth and EKU added another tally in the seventh while shutting CMU down the rest of the way.
CMU had five hits to EKU's seven and both teams committed one error.
The Chippewas scored when Karen Hohs reached on a two-out error, stole second, and scored on a Suzie Giroux RBI-double in the gap to left-center.
In the second game of the day, the Chippewas came from behind to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the victory.
Michigan State's Meghan Darhower hit a solo homer in the fifth to give MSU a 1-0 lead. Darhower's shot to left field hit the top of the fence and bounced over to break the scoreless tie.
CMU fought back in the bottom of the sixth with four hits, including a RBI single by Amy Hudson, a two-run single by Jacque Benedict and an RBI double by Christin Sobeck.
Jessica Garvin went the distance to earn the win. She gave up seven hits and fanned six.
Hudson was 2-for-3 with a triple and Stephanie Crews was 2-for-3 as well.
"Garvin threw a bad pitch that was hit for a homer but she did a nice job today," coach Margo Jonker said. "I was happy with the way we hung in there today and competed. The MSU game was a great one and our intensity was good. We're starting to hit better but our defense and pitching were not where they needed to be in the first game of the day."
The Chippewas close play in the UCF Tournament with a game against the host Golden Knights on Sunday at 3 p.m. UCF defeated CMU, 6-3, on Friday.
