Team 48 Clinches 14th Straight MAC Tournament Appearance

The Chippewa softball team clinched its 14th straight trip to the Mid-American Conference Tournament with a victory over Miami (OH) on Saturday afternoon.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan Softball will head back to Akron for the Mid-American Conference Tournament in the beginning of May after taking a win from Miami (OH) at Margo Jonker Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Chippewas fell in game one of the double header, 1-8 but rebounded to grab a 7-6 victory in game two. CMU moves to 23-19 overall this season and 14-8 in the MAC while the RedHawks move to 34-15 and 15-8. In the first game, Miami (OH) clinched their spot in the tournament as well.
Game 1
Miami (OH) struck early in the first game, with an RBI single – scoring two runs. In the third inning, two RBI doubles and an RBI single extend the RedHawks' lead to 5-0 over CMU.
London Williams charted an RBI single up the middle to score Emma Lotus and put the only run of the game on the board for the Chippewas.
The RedHawks plated another in the fourth and two more in the seventh, reaching the final of 1-8 in favor of Miami (OH).
Mackenzie Langan took the start in the circle for Central Michigan, throwing 2.1 innings, giving up five runs, all earned. The senior issued two walks and struck out two in the outing. Aubrey Strelow entered in relief for her fifth appearance in the same number of games.
Strelow finished the game, throwing the final 4.2 innings with three runs allowed and collecting four strikeouts.
Angela Petrovitch charted two hits in the game, and Central Michigan recorded six as a team.
Game 2
The bats started hot for the Chippewas in the second game. Central Michigan faced the Miami (OH) pitcher at the start of game two who threw the entirety of game one in the circle.
London Williams collected her second and third RBI of the day with a double down the left field line as the third batter. Angela Petrovitch and Jenna Kuzara scored on the hit, who both reached via base hit of their own to start the bottom half of the inning.
Miami (OH) answered in the top of the second with an RBI double of their own making the score 3-1 in favor of CMU.
In the bottom of that inning, Williams tossed another RBI onto her total for the day with an RBI single to right center, scoring Cierra Laska. Grace Koenig also recorded and RBI in the inning as she grounded out to second base and Petrovitch scored on the ball in play.
A sacrifice fly in the third for the RedHawks made the game 2-5 at the end of the third inning, favoring CMU. Another RBI came off the bat of Koenig scored Williams and the Chippewas bumped the lead to four; 6-2.
In the fifth inning, Miami (OH) brought the game within two, with an RBI single to right field and another sacrifice fly.
Rachel Cairo drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth inning and moved CMU to a 7-4 lead.
Miami (OH) tacked on two more in the top of the 7th inning, bringing the game within one, but the Chippewas were able to get the final out and secure the victory.
Cierra Laska grabbed her seventh save of the season in the win, entering in the top of the fifth inning, with runners on first and second, two outs.
Laska struck out the final batter of the inning and worked a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the sixth with two fly outs and a strikeout.
Brooklyn Compau took the start in the circle for the Chippewas, her 18th of the season. Compau took the win, moving her record to 10-5 on the season. In the 4.2 innings the junior pitched, she issued four runs on 11 hits.
In the second game of the day, the Chippewas charted 12 hits. Angela Petrovitch, Grace Koenig and Rachel Cairo each had two, while London Williams had her second three-hit game of the season.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon for the series finale. Central Michigan's four seniors will be celebrated afterwards as they will play their final game at Margo Jonker Stadium.
Cierra Laska, Angela Petrovitch, Paige Sayler, and Mackenzie Langan are the four graduating from the program.
