MUNCIE, Ind. -- Bryan Mitzel's two home runs and four RBI were not enough to prevent Central Michigan University from dropping the final game of its Mid-American Conference baseball series with Ball State University here Sunday afternoon by a 7-6 margin.
The Chippewas, defending MAC champions, are now 3-6 for the conference season and 20-14 overall. Ball State goes to 23-11 and 10-2.
Mitzel slugged two-run homers in the fourth and eighth innings to raise his total for the season to seven.
Ball State's six-run fourth frame proved too much for CMU to overcome.
BSU scored once in the first for a 1-0 lead before Mitzel's first blast made it 2-1 going into the bottom of the fourth.
The Cardinals knocked out starter and loser Jayson Ruhlman in that inning with their six runs.
Jason Collmenter pitched the next four and one-third innings of scoreless ball for CMU. He allowed four hits, striking out four and walking two. Nathan Pung tossed a scoreless frame for the Chippewas.
Ruhlman lasted three and two-third innings, giving up 11 hits and seven earned runs. He walked two and struck out six.
In addition to Mitzel's two-run shot in the eighth, CMU got an RBI double from J.T. Jones and an RBI single by Troy Moratti for its other two markers.
Mitzel was the lone Chippewa with more than one hit as the visitors had just seven for the game.
CMU returns to action at home on Wednesday against Aquinas at 3 p.m.
