Chippewas Win Opener Against NIU, 14-6

DeKALB, Ill. -- Kurtis Wells and Derek Schaller each homered in an 11-run fifth inning here Saturday afternoon in Central Michigan University's 14-6 Mid-American Conference baseball win over Northern Illinois.
The win upped CMU's record to 22-14 and 4-6 in the MAC. The NIU record falls to 10-24 NIU 1-9.
Trailing by a 3-1 margin, the Chippewas posted 11 runs for a 12-3 lead and never looked back in the first game of a doubleheader. Highlights of the inning were a grand slam homer by Kurtis Wells and a three-run shot by Derek Schaller.
Junior right-hander Ty Dunham was the beneficiary of the outburst to claim his fourth win against three losses. He went eight innings, allowing nine hits and six runs (three earned). Ty walked two and fanned seven.
James Richhio, sophomore lefty, faced three batters in the ninth inning for CMU.
The starter and loser for the Huskies was Nick Hall (1-5) who went the first four and one-third innings. He was touched for eight runs, seven of them earned.
Wells had thee hits and six RBI while Jim Geldhof added three hits and two RBI. Schaller had two hits and three RBI. Also collecting two hits were Noah Lankford and Ryan Peel.
