Chippewas Explode for 21 Hits in 15-2 Win

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University's baseball team continued its torrid hitting in Mid-American Conference play with a 15-2 victory over Marshall University here Friday afternoon.
CMU banged out 21 hits en route to its fourth straight conference win. The Chippewaqs are now 7-6 in the MAC and 25-15 for the season. The Thundering Herd fall to 13-23 and 6-7.
During CMU's four-game MAC win streak, the Chippewas have scored 56 runs and pounded out 72 hits to raise their team batting average to .298.
CMU scored in every inning but the fourth, plating four in the first, one in the second and six more in the third for an 11-2 lead.
Junior right-hander Ty Dunham was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst. He went the first eight innings, allowing eight hits and two runs. He walked two and fanned five to raise his record to 5-3.
Senior first baseman Kurtis Wells, who went 7-for-14 last week to share MAC West "Player of the Week" laurels, had five hits in six at-bats. He also drove in four runs, one on a towering solo homer to right. Two more of his hits were doubles.
Senior Troy Moratti banged out four hits and drove in one run while Jim Geldhof clubbed three hits and knocked in three runs. Jeff LaFavors Jr., Bryan Mitzel and J.T. Jones also had two hits apiece.
Chris Koutsavlis was the starter and loser for MU, dropping his record to 2-5. He went two and one-third frames, allowing 11 hits and nine earned runs. Andrew Hancock tossed the final five and two-third innings.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
