Chippewas Bounce Back with 7-2 Win

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University's baseball team had the right mix here Saturday afternoon in putting a halt to a four-game Mid-American Conference losing skid.
Senior Jason Cairns hurled seven and two-third strong innings and the Chippewas pounded out 12 hits in grabbing a 7-2 win over the University of Toledo.
The win upped CMU's record to 17-12 for the season and 1-4 in the MAC while the Rockets fall to 8-20 and 2-6. The final game of the series is slated for here Sunday at 1 p.m.
CMU dropped Friday's opener with UT by a 7-2 margin.
Cairns allowed five hits and two earned runs while walking four and striking out eight. He improved his record to 3-4.
The Chippewas scored twice in the second inning on a two-run single by Brian Campbell.
CMU scored an unearned run in the third and added two more in the fourth. Ryan Peel tripled to open the frame and scored on Jeff LaFavors' single. LaFavors ended up scoring on a single by Jim Geldhof.
After the Rockets plated two runs in the fifth to make it 5-2, CMU answered with one in the fifth on an RBI double by Sean Hoorelbeke.
An RBI single by Geldhof in the eighth capped the scoring for the Chippewas.
James Ricchio went one-third of an inning of scoreless relief and Nathan Pung set UT down in order in the final frame.
Troy Moratti had three hits for the Chippewas while Geldhof and Hoorelbeke had two apiece.
