Chippewas Hold On For 5-4 MAC Tourney Win

OXFORD, Ohio -- Central Michigan University advanced into the winner's bracket here Wednesday morning in the 2005 Mid-American Conference baseball tourney, holding on for a 5-4 victory over Western Michigan University.
The win put the Chippewas into a 4 p.m. Thursday game against Ball State.
CMU is now 40-16 for the season while the Broncos fall to 26-23. It was CMU's 16th straight win against MAC competition.
Junior right-hander Ty Dunham,named first team All-MAC on Tuesday, went the distance for CMU to raise his record to 9-3. He allowed just five hits but was touched for four runs, all earned. Ty walked three and whiffed seven.
Dunham set a school record for innings pitched in a season with 115.3.
Junior Troy Moratti got the Chippewas off to a quick start when he singled in the first, took second on a sacrifice bunt by J. T. Jones and scored on Jim Geldhof's single to center.
WMU tied it in the fifth when Justin Carter doubled to right center, movede to second on a sac bunt. He then scored on a single by Kyle Maunus.
CMU came right back with two of its own in the fifth. After Ryan Peel singled, Moratti tripled him in and then scored on Jones'suicide bunt single.
The Chippewas picked up two important runs in the seventh when Moratti singled, stole second and scored when the WMU third sacker threw wildly to first on Jones' bunt. Jones took second on the play and then scored on a single by Geldhof.
Dunham walked the leadoff batter in the eighth and ninth innings, and both of them ended up scoring. The big blow in the ninth was Carter's two-run homer to left center following a walk.
Dunham then settled down and retired the next three batters for the win.
Geldhof was four-for-four at the plate while Moratti had three safeties and Jeff LaFavors two.
Carter had three hits for the Broncos.
