CHICAGO, Ill. - Despite another strong effort, the Central Michigan University women's soccer team came up on the wrong side of the scoreboard, losing here to DePaul 2-0 in a non-conference match. The Blue Demons scored in the final five minutes of the first half to grab a 1-0 lead, then made that goal stand up by blanking the Chippewas for the rest of the game. CMU put forth a last-minute rush to try and tie the game, sending everyone forward in the final seconds, but couldn't convert. DePaul scored a meaningless goal in the final few seconds to provide the final margin. It was the third time in the last four matches that CMU was shut out, and the loss dropped them to 1-5-1 on the season.
CMU gave freshman goalkeeper Kristin Hubright her first career start, and she saw plenty of action as DePaul fired 27 shots in the match, 13 of them on goal. Hubright made nine saves in the match, but took the loss.
"Kristin Hubright made a lot of good saves and aggressively challenged balls today," head coach Tony DiTucci said. "She played very well in her first collegiate game."
CMU managed 13 shots in the contest, with five of those shots being on net. DePaul had two goalkeepers combine for the shutout. The Chippewas hit the crossbar with a shot midway through the first half that would have given them an early lead.
"It was a little bit of the same story for us," DiTucci said. "We played with great energy and effort, and worked really hard out on the field. If we had converted that chance early on, who knows how the game would have turned out.
"DePaul is a very talented team with a lot of good players. All seven on our non-conference opponents have been very good teams, and we've really challenged ourselves during this part of the schedule. I believe, and our team believes, that these games have really prepared us for Mid-American Conference play. It's disappointing to have the record we have, but we can still accomplish our goal of winning the conference."
CMU opens MAC play with a pair of matches on the road this weekend. The Chippewas will play at Ohio on Friday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m. and then travel to Akron to play the Zips on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m.
