MOUNT PLEASANT - Mike Kirschenheiter struck out a career-high seven hitters in relief to lead Central Michigan University to a 6-3 win over Bowling Green in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader at Theunissen Stadium. The visiting Falcons won the opener, 7-3.
The Chippewas (16-14 overall, 5-3 Mid-American Conference) scored four times with two outs in the third inning of game two. Troy Moratti singled with the bases loaded to drive in a pair, and Ben Humphrey followed with a double to center that plated Moratti and Cody Allen.
Noah Lankford's defensive gem in the top of the fourth halted a BGSU (16-12, 5-3 MAC) rally. With the bases loaded and two outs, Lankford dove toward second base to keep the ball in the infield, then flipped to shortstop Bryan Resnick for the force out. Resnick would then double home Lankford in the bottom half of the inning.
Josh Collmenter worked five innings to improve to the 3-4 on the year. Kirschenheiter earned his team-leading third save by holding the Falcons to just two hits over the final four innings. He retired nine of the final 11 hitters he faced and struck out a pair of BGSU batters in each of the final three innings.
Seven different players accounted for CMU's eight hits in the nightcap. Resnick finished 2-for-2 with a single and a double and drove in a pair.
In the opener, Bowling Green scored five runs in the first two innings en route to a 7-3 win.
Tyler Wasserman and Josh Dietz both had two-run doubles in the first inning, and Eric Lawson knocked a solo home run in the second to build a 5-0 lead. That score would stand up until Bryan Mitzel nailed his team-leading 10th homer of the season to lead off the seventh, but CMU would draw no closer than four runs. Bowling Green added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth via an Andrew Foster two-run homer, and the Chippewas tacked on a pair of unearned runs in their final at-bat.
Mitzel was 2-for-3 in the opener. His seventh-inning homer was the 35th of his career, moving him into sole possession of third place on CMU's career homer list.
Kurt Wells was 3-for-5 with three singles for Bowling Green in game one.
The third and final game of the weekend series is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday. The contest will be broadcast live on WMMI 830 AM.
